A 6 today, and the money has people's names on it

Dear Reader,

The heating went on in our house last night for the first time since March, and nobody announced it. Somebody just walked past the dial and turned it, which is a very 6 way for a season to change.

Six is the household number. Love, rooms, meals, the particular people who are actually yours rather than the ones you are polite to.

Something domestic will want you today. A corner of a room, a conversation with somebody you live with or wish you lived nearer to, a meal that gets eaten sitting down.

The tilt in this number is towards giving slightly more than is sustainable, quietly, for years. Sixes rarely spot the point where looking after turned into carrying.

Being on the receiving end today takes nothing away from anybody. There is no ledger in a house that works.

And a nice thing in a room counts as a reason on a 6.

Money under a 6 is never abstract. It is somebody’s trainers, somebody’s train fare, the boiler, the dog, the birthday nobody else remembered to plan for.

This is the number where spending on other people goes uncounted. It gets filed under love rather than outgoings, and when a household asks itself where the money went, the honest answer is usually people.

There is often one person doing the noticing. Who needs new shoes, when the insurance renews, whether there is enough for the thing at the weekend. That is unpaid administrative work and it wears at the same rate as the paid kind.

The other side of 6 is that beauty gets cut first. The flowers, the good coffee, whatever costs nine pounds and makes a Tuesday better, because those feel indulgent in a way a phone contract never does.

Nothing needs reorganising today. It is worth seeing how much of the household’s money runs through your attention, and how little of it comes back your way.

Some of the household’s money is allowed to be spent on the person who keeps the household running.
