A 3 today, and the question is who listens

Dear Reader,

Second 3 inside three days, which happens a few times a year, and when a number comes round that fast it tends to show its other face. Tuesday was about saying things. This morning is about who is on the receiving end.

Three is usually described as the number that talks. Half of it is being heard, and that half gets almost no attention.

Most people can name, without thinking, the one person they would ring with genuine news at half past eleven at night. That list is shorter than the friends list and it is the real one.

Some people you talk to. Some people you talk at, pleasantly, for years. The difference shows up in whether you leave the conversation knowing something you did not know going in.

Nothing about this needs acting on today. Noticing the difference is the whole of it.

Being properly heard is a thing you are allowed to want more of.

Yesterday’s letter asked people to cost the big one, and a lot of you did it before lunch. So 22 takes the ring.

G. writes: “Fourteen thousand. I have been treating it like a million since 2019.”
That gap is the ordinary one, and it closes the moment somebody writes the figure down. Fourteen thousand is a thing with a timeline attached. A million is a mood.

R. writes: “Mine came out huge and now I feel worse than before.”
Fair, and a real answer is still better than a fog. Large figures usually break into stages, and the first stage is almost never the expensive one. Send me the number if you want a second pair of eyes on it.

E. writes: “Why do master days keep landing on my worst weeks?”
There are two or three a month, so some will land badly by pure arithmetic. Nothing about a 22 promises a good week. It marks scale, and scale is uncomfortable when everything else is already loud.

You are allowed to want somebody who listens as well as you do.
