WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19
TODAY IS A 1, AND SOMETHING IS STARTING WHETHER YOU PLANNED IT OR NOT

Dear Reader, a 1 on a Wednesday is slightly awkward, because we have all agreed that things begin on Mondays and it is a bit late in the week for that. The number doesn’t hold with the calendar, and something is starting anyway.

One is the number of beginnings, and beginnings almost never announce themselves. They turn up as a thought you can’t put down, or a name that comes up twice before lunch.

So don’t go hunting for a grand opening today. The small one is the real one.

A 1 day has a forward tilt. Things that have been sitting still may find a little room to move, and they tend to move without being pushed.

It can also feel solitary. One is the number of going first, and going first is quiet work. That isn’t the same as being on your own.

Nothing needs deciding. Just notice what’s beginning.

WHICH ONE IS TUGGING AT YOU?
Tap it and an email opens, written for you. Naming it is enough.
The thing that keeps starting in my head
The name that came up twice
The door that opened a crack

TODAY’S MONEY NUMBER
9
Lucky you. Lucky life.
Let’s make magic!
TODAY’S MONEY NUMBER:
WHY EVERY PRICE ENDS IN 9

Whatever you bought this week, the price almost certainly ended in a 9. Nine ninety-nine, nineteen, ninety-nine pence, forty-nine a month.

Shops do it because a price ending in 9 reads as cheaper than the round number a penny above it, which has been tested to death and still works on all of us. That part is shop-keeping, not the number.

What 9 does is the other half of it. Nine is the number of endings and letting go, and a price ending in 9 is a small, engineered moment of letting go. Somebody picked the number of release for the exact second the money leaves you.

None of that is sinister. It’s just worth seeing, because the same trick runs on the prices you set. If everything you charge ends in a 9, you have quietly borrowed a supermarket’s instinct about your own work.

Round numbers behave differently. They read as settled rather than clever, and settled is cheaper to hold. Forty is a decision. Thirty-nine is a nudge, and it’s aimed at you as much as at anybody buying.

SIT WITH ONE OF THESE
Tap whichever one lands. The reply comes with the question in it.
What was the last price I saw ending in 9?
What do I charge, and why that number?
What would a round number sound like out loud?
Which price have I never changed?

You’re allowed to name a round number and just leave it there.

A big hug,

Lucky Number

P.S. I put my prices up once by simply rounding them. Nothing else changed, and not one person mentioned it, which told me a good deal more than the extra money did.
EVERY BEGINNING STARTS SMALLER THAN YOU THINK.
